A gastrectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of all or part of the stomach. This operation is typically performed to treat stomach cancer, but it can also be used for other conditions such as severe peptic ulcers that have not responded to medication, or obesity. The extent of the gastrectomy depends on the condition being treated.

There are several types of gastrectomies. A total gastrectomy removes the entire stomach. A partial gastrectomy, also known as a subtotal gastrectomy, removes only a portion of the stomach. Another type, a distal gastrectomy, removes the lower part of the stomach, while a proximal gastrectomy removes the upper part.

Following a gastrectomy, the remaining stomach is reconnected to the small intestine (a procedure called reconstruction) or the esophagus to allow for digestion and nutrient absorption. Recovery time varies depending on the type of surgery and the individual patient's health.

Dietary changes are a significant part of recovery. Patients often need to eat smaller, more frequent meals and may experience changes in how they digest certain foods. Potential complications can include dumping syndrome, where food moves too quickly from the stomach to the small intestine, leading to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and other symptoms. Nutritional deficiencies can also occur, requiring supplements or dietary adjustments. Long-term follow-up care is usually necessary to monitor for recurrence of the disease and manage any ongoing health issues.
