Gaslubricated refers to a type of bearing that utilizes a pressurized gas as a lubricant to separate moving surfaces. Unlike traditional fluid bearings that rely on oil or grease, gas bearings operate with a thin film of gas, often air, nitrogen, or helium, maintained between the rotating shaft and the stationary bearing surface. This gas film is typically generated by the relative motion of the surfaces or by an external gas supply system.

The primary advantage of gaslubricated bearings is their extremely low friction. Because the surfaces are separated by a gas film, there is minimal or no direct contact, leading to very little wear and tear. This results in a long operational life and the ability to achieve very high rotational speeds. Furthermore, gas bearings are clean as they do not rely on oil, making them suitable for applications where contamination is a concern, such as in the food processing or semiconductor industries.

However, gaslubricated bearings also have drawbacks. They often require precise manufacturing tolerances to maintain the thin gas film effectively. Startup and shutdown periods can be critical, as the gas film may not be fully established at low speeds, potentially leading to some initial wear. They can also be susceptible to vibrations and require a stable gas supply, which can add complexity and cost to the system. Despite these challenges, gaslubricated bearings are valuable in specialized applications demanding high speeds, low friction, and cleanliness.
