Gasifieringsmedlet, often translated as "gasifying agent" or "syngas agent," refers to the substance used in a gasifier to convert carbonaceous materials into synthesis gas, or syngas. Syngas is primarily a mixture of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2), with smaller amounts of other gases like carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4). The choice of gasifying agent significantly influences the syngas composition, its heating value, and the overall efficiency of the gasification process.

The most common gasifying agents are steam (H2O) and oxygen (O2), or a combination of both. Steam reacts with the carbonaceous material at high temperatures to produce hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Oxygen, when introduced, facilitates partial oxidation, which is an exothermic reaction that provides the necessary heat for the endothermic steam-carbon reaction and other endothermic gasification reactions. Air can also be used as a gasifying agent, but it introduces nitrogen into the syngas, lowering its heating value and potentially complicating downstream processes.

Other less common gasifying agents include carbon dioxide (CO2), which can react with carbon to produce CO (the Boudouard reaction), and certain types of molten salts or liquids. The selection of the gasifying agent depends on the type of feedstock being gasified, the desired syngas composition for specific applications (e.g., for chemical synthesis or power generation), and economic considerations. For example, using pure oxygen can yield a high-calorific value syngas suitable for producing liquid fuels, while using air is generally cheaper but results in a lower-quality syngas.
