gascementatie

Gascementatie is a term found in some Dutch-language technical literature and may refer to processes where gas interacts with cementation, or to cementing operations in gas-bearing formations. It is not a universally standardized term in English-language geology or civil engineering, and its meaning can vary by context.

In geology and diagenesis, cementation is the process by which dissolved minerals precipitate from pore fluids and bind sediment grains into rock. The presence of gas in pore waters can influence the chemistry and kinetics of cementation, potentially affecting mineral precipitation, grain binding, porosity, and permeability. Gas-related changes in pore pressure or gas composition (for example methane or carbon dioxide) can modify cement textures and the evolution of the rock’s mechanical properties.

In petroleum and construction engineering, cementation refers to the use of cement to seal annuli and stabilize wells, pipelines, or barriers. When gas is present in the vicinity, cementing must address gas migration, pressure differentials, and possible chemical attack on cement by CO2, H2S, or other gas components. This leads to tailored cement formulations, additives, and testing regimes to ensure gas-tight seals and long-term integrity.

Research on gas–cement interactions covers geochemical modeling, laboratory experiments with gas-exposed cement, and field case studies. Methods include porosity and permeability measurements, X-ray diffraction, microscopy, and numerical simulations to understand and predict the behavior of cement in gas-influenced environments.
