Gametogenic is an adjective describing anything related to gametogenesis, the biological process by which diploid germ cells give rise to haploid gametes (such as spermatozoa and ova) in animals and analogous reproductive cells in plants, fungi, and algae. The term emphasizes the production, development, and maturation of gametes rather than their fusion during fertilization.

In animals, gametogenesis occurs in the gonads. Spermatogenesis in the testes produces mature sperm through mitotic divisions of spermatogonia, followed by meiosis and spermiogenesis. Oogenesis in the ovaries produces ova through a series of divisions and meiotic reductions, often with asymmetric cytoplasmic division and the formation of polar bodies. The process is regulated by hormonal cues and cellular differentiation programs, and culminates in gametes that are ready for fertilization.

In plants and many algae, gametogenesis occurs during the gametophyte generation. Microgametogenesis and megagametogenesis produce microgametes (sperm) and megagametes (eggs) within pollen grains or embryo sacs, respectively. In bryophytes, pteridophytes, and flowering plants, gametogenic development forms the male and female gametophytes and their respective gametes, contributing to the alternation of generations.

Cell biologically, gametogenesis involves germ line cells that undergo meiosis to reduce chromosome number, followed by differentiation into mature gametes. Meiosis includes recombination and chromosomal segregation, generating genetic diversity and ensuring proper inheritance. The study of gametogenic processes intersects developmental biology, genetics, and evolutionary biology.

Gametogenic terminology is used in histology, developmental biology, and agriculture to describe tissues, cells, or stages associated with the formation of gametes, with relevance to fertility, breeding, and reproductive success.
