A gaffer is the head electrician on a film or television production. This role is also known as the chief lighting technician. The gaffer is responsible for executing the director of photography's lighting plan. They work closely with the director of photography to achieve the desired look and mood for each scene. This involves not only setting up lights but also selecting the appropriate fixtures, gels, and modifiers. The gaffer supervises a team of lighting technicians, often called "sparks" or "electrics," who assist with the physical placement and operation of the lighting equipment.

The gaffer's responsibilities extend to ensuring the safe and efficient use of electrical equipment on set. They manage power distribution, calculate load requirements, and troubleshoot any electrical issues that may arise. Collaboration is key, as the gaffer also communicates with other departments, such as the grip department, to ensure the lighting setup integrates seamlessly with camera placement and set dressing. The gaffer's expertise is crucial in creating the visual aesthetic of a production and directly impacts the overall quality of the final product.
