Fényképezgépfilmek, more commonly known as photographic film, are transparent, flexible strips coated with a light-sensitive emulsion. This emulsion typically contains silver halide crystals suspended in gelatin. When light strikes these crystals during exposure in a camera, a latent image is formed. This latent image is invisible until the film undergoes a chemical development process.

The film is then immersed in various chemical baths. A developer converts the exposed silver halide crystals into metallic silver, creating the visible image. A stop bath halts the development process. A fixer then removes the unexposed silver halide crystals, making the image permanent and insensitive to further light exposure. Finally, washing removes residual chemicals, and the film is dried.

Photographic film comes in various formats, including 35mm, medium format (like 120 film), and large format sheets. It also differs in its sensitivity to light, measured by ISO (or ASA) speed. Higher ISO films are more sensitive and suitable for low-light conditions, but may produce more visible grain. Color films are more complex, typically featuring multiple layers of emulsion sensitive to different colors of light, along with color couplers that form dyes during development. Black and white films, on the other hand, produce an image using varying tones of silver. While digital photography has largely replaced film for many applications, film photography continues to be appreciated for its unique aesthetic qualities and the distinctive look of film grain and tonality.
