Färgåtergivning, or color rendering, refers to the ability of a light source to reproduce the colors of an object faithfully. When a light source illuminates an object, the object absorbs certain wavelengths of light and reflects others. The reflected light reaches our eyes, and we perceive the color of the object. A light source with good color rendering will emit a spectrum of light that allows objects to appear in their true colors. Conversely, a light source with poor color rendering may cause colors to look distorted, washed out, or shifted.

The quality of color rendering is often measured using the Color Rendering Index (CRI). The CRI is a quantitative measure of how accurately a light source reveals the true colors of various objects compared to a reference source, such as a natural light source or a blackbody radiator. A CRI of 100 indicates that the colors appear as they would under the reference light. Lower CRI values suggest that the colors will be less accurately reproduced. Different applications require different levels of color rendering. For instance, art galleries, retail stores, and photography studios typically require high CRI lighting to ensure accurate color perception. In contrast, general illumination in warehouses or parking lots may not necessitate such high color fidelity.

Several factors influence color rendering, including the spectral power distribution of the light source. Light sources with a continuous and balanced spectrum tend to have better color rendering properties. LEDs, for example, have advanced significantly in their color rendering capabilities, with many now offering high CRI options. Understanding and controlling color rendering is crucial for creating environments where accurate color perception is important.
