Fuzzy logic, or fuzzyLogikbasierte in German, is a form of many-valued logic derived from fuzzy set theory. It deals with reasoning that is approximate rather than fixed and exact. Unlike traditional Boolean logic where a statement is either true or false, fuzzy logic allows for degrees of truth. This means that a statement can be partially true and partially false.

The core of fuzzy logic lies in the concept of fuzzy sets. In a classical set, an element either belongs to the set or it does not. In a fuzzy set, an element can have a degree of membership between 0 and 1, inclusive. For instance, in a set of "tall people," a person who is 6 feet might have a membership degree of 0.8, while a person who is 5 feet 10 inches might have a degree of 0.5.

Fuzzy logic is implemented through fuzzy inference systems. These systems typically involve three main stages: fuzzification, inference, and defuzzification. Fuzzification is the process of converting crisp (precise) input values into fuzzy membership values. The inference engine then applies fuzzy rules, which are often expressed in an "IF-THEN" format using linguistic terms (e.g., "IF temperature is hot THEN fan speed is high"). Finally, defuzzification converts the fuzzy output back into a crisp, actionable value.

This approach is particularly useful for controlling complex systems where precise mathematical models are difficult to define or where human expertise, expressed in qualitative terms, is paramount. Applications include control systems in appliances, automotive systems, medical diagnosis, and artificial intelligence.
