Fusiealgoritmen, also known as merge algorithms, are a class of algorithms used in computer science to combine two or more sorted lists into a single sorted list. The most well-known example is the merge step within the merge sort algorithm.

The fundamental principle of a fusiealgoritme is to iteratively compare the smallest elements of the input lists. The smallest element among these is then appended to the resulting merged list, and it is removed from its original list. This process continues until all elements from all input lists have been transferred to the merged list.

A common implementation involves using pointers or indices to keep track of the current position in each input list. The algorithm advances the pointer of the list from which the smallest element was taken. This systematic comparison and selection ensures that the output list remains sorted throughout the merging process.

Fusiealgoritmen are characterized by their efficiency. If the total number of elements in the input lists is n, the time complexity of a fusiealgoritme is typically O(n). This makes them suitable for large datasets. Their stability is also a desirable property, meaning that if two elements have the same value, their relative order in the output list is the same as their relative order in the input lists. This stability is crucial in certain applications where the original order of identical elements matters.

While the merge step of merge sort is the most prominent application, fusiealgoritmen also find use in other areas such as database operations, external sorting, and parallel computing. Their simplicity and predictable performance make them a foundational concept in algorithm design.
