Functionalism is a term used in multiple disciplines to describe approaches that explain phenomena by the roles or functions they perform rather than by their internal constitution. In philosophy of mind, functionalism and its variants define mental states by their causal relations to inputs, outputs, and other mental states. In sociology and anthropology, structural functionalism analyzes social institutions in terms of the functions they perform for a system.

In philosophy of mind, functionalism treats mental states as functional states defined by their causal roles: inputs from the environment and internal states, and outputs to behavior and further mental processes. This framework allows multiple realizability—for example, mental states could be implemented in different substrates as long as the same causal pattern holds. Variants include machine-state functionalism and computational theories of mind. Critics raise concerns about qualia, subjective experience, and the apparent gap between function and felt experience.

In sociology, structural functionalism views society as a system of interdependent parts that contribute to social stability and performance. Originating with Durkheim and later developed by Talcott Parsons and Robert Merton, it analyzes institutions, norms, and rituals by the functions they serve, such as socialization, integration, or adaptation. The approach emphasizes equilibrium and persistence but has been criticized for overlooking conflict, power asymmetries, and rapid social change.

Functionalism has been influential across disciplines, shaping cognitive science, philosophy of mind, and sociology. It faces ongoing debates about the adequacy of functional descriptions for subjective experience or social power dynamics, and about the limits of explaining complex phenomena solely by functions. Despite criticisms, functionalist ideas remain central to discussions of mental representation, artificial intelligence, and the analysis of social systems.
