Funcionalismi is a broad movement in art, architecture, and design that emerged in the early 20th century. Its core principle is that the form of an object or building should be determined by its intended function, rather than by purely aesthetic considerations. This emphasis on practicality and utility led to a rejection of ornate decoration and historical styles, favoring clean lines, geometric shapes, and the honest expression of materials and construction methods.

In architecture, functionalism manifested in designs that prioritized efficient use of space, natural light, and airflow. Buildings were often characterized by their open floor plans, large windows, and flat roofs. Prominent figures associated with architectural functionalism include Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, and Mies van der Rohe, whose works often embodied the motto "form follows function."

Within design, functionalism aimed to create objects that were not only beautiful in their simplicity but also easy to manufacture and use. This led to mass-produced furniture, household items, and tools that were both affordable and durable. The Bauhaus school in Germany was a significant hub for functionalist design, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration between artists, architects, and craftspeople.

While functionalism greatly influenced modernism and continues to be a relevant concept in design thinking, it has also faced criticism for sometimes neglecting the emotional and psychological aspects of human experience, leading to designs that could be perceived as cold or sterile.
