Frukttätheten is a proposed metric in plant sciences and horticulture intended to describe how densely fruits populate a defined portion of a plant canopy or cultivation area. The concept emerges from a need to relate fruit production to available space and resources, aiding management decisions such as pruning and thinning.

Definition and units: Frukttätheten can be defined as the number of fruits per unit canopy volume (for example fruits per cubic meter), per unit canopy surface area (fruits per square meter of canopy projection), or as mass per unit canopy volume (kilograms per cubic meter). The choice of unit depends on study goals and practical measurement considerations. Measurements can be obtained through direct counting on representative shoots, non-destructive imaging (stereo photography, LiDAR, or hyperspectral methods), or via post-harvest fruit mass.

Applications: In orchard management, higher frukttätheten typically indicates greater competition among fruits for light, carbohydrates, and nutrients, which can reduce individual fruit size and uniformity and increase fruit drop. Thinning and pruning strategies aim to adjust frukttätheten toward an optimal range for the cultivar and climate. In research, it can be used to model source–sink balance, compare performance across planting densities or training systems, and evaluate effects of cultural practices on yield quality.

Limitations and status: The term is not universally standardized, and definitions as well as measurement protocols vary. Seasonal changes, fruit size variation, and cultivar differences can affect readings. More work is needed to establish reference ranges and widely adopted methods for reporting frukttätheten.
