Frostlinjen, or the frost line, is the depth in the soil to which freezing temperatures penetrate during the cold season. It is a regional parameter used in geology, agriculture, and civil engineering to indicate how deep the ground is likely to freeze in winter.

Depth varies with climate, soil moisture, snow cover, and soil type. Snow provides insulation and can keep freezing shallower; wetter soils and finer textures can freeze to greater depths; dry sandy soils may freeze less deeply. The frost line is typically measured using soil temperature sensors or frost probes and is often referenced by building codes.

Implications: The frostlinjen influences foundation design, trenching for utilities, road maintenance, and drainage. When ground freezes and then thaws, water expands and contracts, causing frost heave and potential damage to structures. Engineers design frost-protected foundations or dig below the frost depth to minimize movement.

Examples of regional ranges: In many northern European environments frost depths are around 0.5–1.0 meters, while harsher winters may see deeper frost. In mild coastal climates, the frost line can be much shallower. The concept also helps distinguish seasonal frost from permafrost, which represents permanently frozen ground at greater depths.
