The word combines “frontward,” meaning toward the front, with “facing,” indicating the direction the surface presents.

Usage and distinctions: While frontwardfacing appears in some technical documents, more common variants include front-facing and forward-facing. The latter two are generally used to describe surfaces, cameras, or sensors that point in the front of a device or machine. Frontwardfacing emphasizes the forward-looking orientation in a more explicit directional sense but is not universally standardized.

Applications: In robotics and autonomous systems, frontward-facing sensors such as cameras, LiDAR, or radar are mounted on the forward side of a vehicle to detect obstacles and inform navigation. In drones, forward-facing cameras enable forward flight control and mapping. In consumer electronics, frontward-facing cameras may be described for devices designed to capture forward imagery, though more common phrasing remains front-facing.

Design considerations: Orientation affects field of view, parallax, sensor offset, and calibration. Mounting must account for vibrations, mounting tolerances, and environmental exposure.
