Front-of-pack labels, or FOPLs, are nutrition and health information displayed on the front of packaged food and beverage products. They are designed to convey essential information quickly, helping consumers compare products at a glance and make healthier choices. FOPLs complement the standard nutrition facts panel that appears elsewhere on the packaging and can be either mandated by policy or adopted voluntarily, depending on the jurisdiction.

FOPLs can be broadly categorized into interpretive and reductive formats. Interpretive labels use colors, symbols, or grades to summarize overall nutritional quality. Examples include traffic light labeling, which uses red, amber, and green colors to indicate levels of nutrients; Nutri-Score, a letter-based rating system with color coding (A to E); and the Health Star Rating, which awards a rating from 0.5 to 5 stars. Reductive labels present specific numeric values, such as calories or grams of nutrients, without summarizing overall healthfulness. Many markets also employ warning labels that highlight high levels of sugar, sodium, or saturated fat.

Regulation and implementation of FOPLs vary globally. Some regions require standardized symbols or warning messages; others rely on voluntary adoption by manufacturers. Design considerations emphasize readability, consistency, accessibility, and protection against misleading simplifications. Critics note that FOPLs may oversimplify nutrition, potentially prompting product reformulation without addressing overall dietary patterns, and that effectiveness depends on clear, culturally appropriate design and consumer education.
