In chemistry and biochemistry, reductive describes processes that involve gain of electrons. A reductant is a substance that donates electrons; a reductive reaction reduces a substrate. In biology, reductive evolution describes the loss or simplification of traits over time, often in isolated or specialized environments like caves or parasitic lifestyles. Such evolution contrasts with adaptive or constructive evolution, but both reflect the influence of environment and lineage on trait presence. In geology or environmental chemistry, reductive conditions indicate environments with low oxidation potential, where reduced species predominate.
