Framdrivningsenhet is a term used in Norwegian engineering to denote the propulsion unit that provides forward thrust for a vessel or vehicle. It describes the integrated system that converts energy stored in a fuel or electrical source into mechanical power and ultimately into thrust to move the craft through water or air.

Typical framdrivningsenhet components include a prime mover (such as a diesel engine, gas turbine, or electric motor), a transmission or gearbox, a shaft or drive train, and a propulsor (propeller or waterjet). Modern installations often feature electric drives, shaft generators, and advanced control systems, with the entire unit either mounted inboard or integrated as a pod, thruster, or azimuth unit.

Configurations vary by application. In marine vessels, propulsion may be through a traditional shaft and stern propeller, twin shafts, or podded/azimuth thrusters that rotate for steering and propulsion. Electric propulsion schemes, including diesel-electric and gas-turbine-electric systems, separate the prime mover from the propulsor by power distribution systems.

Key design considerations include power demand, efficiency, redundancy, and maintenance. The layout must ensure safe operation, reliable starting and stopping, and adequate cooling and lubrication. Classification societies set rules for installation, noise, vibration, emissions, and system integration.
