Fourwheelers are vehicles with four wheels. The term is used in different ways: in many regions it refers to four-wheel-drive vehicles, especially off-road trucks and utility vehicles, while in other contexts it refers to four-wheeled recreational vehicles such as all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), commonly known as quad bikes. The word does not denote a single technical standard.

Two common categories are four-wheel-drive automobiles and all-terrain vehicles. In cars, four-wheel drive (4WD) or all-wheel drive (AWD) describes a drivetrain that can send power to all four wheels. 4WD systems are common on trucks and SUVs and can be engaged or disengaged. ATV, or quad, is a compact off-road vehicle with four wheels, powered by a gasoline engine and steered with handlebars.

History: Four-wheel drive emerged in the early 20th century, with military and industrial prototypes. The Willys MB reconnaissance vehicle and the Land Rover Series provided influential early mass-market 4x4 designs around 1941 and 1948 respectively. Since then, four-wheelers have diversified into consumer SUVs, crossovers, and recreational ATVs.

Usage and safety: Fourwheelers serve transportation, recreation, agriculture, and service roles. ATVs are associated with rollover and collision risks; operators are advised to wear protective gear and receive training. Road-use rules vary by jurisdiction.

Regulation and environment: Road-legal fourwheelers require proper registration, licensing, and compliance with safety standards. Environmental considerations include fuel economy and emissions for motor vehicles, as well as noise and habitat impact for off-road use; electric fourwheel-drive and electric ATVs are increasingly common.
