The basic pattern is four-ten as the tens word for forty, with unit numerals one through nine attached to form 41–49. Some variants treat forty as a standalone form and reserve four-ten for emphatic or historical use. In others, the entire forty range is built as a single fused root such as fourten, with post-nominal or pre-nominal positions for the larger numeral depending on the language’s syntax.

Phonology and morphology vary across imagined languages. Some render forty as four-ten with clear separation, others fuse the morphemes into a single fourten. The units 1–9 may be expressed as separate words, affixes, or clitics attached to the forty morpheme.
