In many health systems they also screen for risk factors for complications, such as diabetes-related foot problems, and refer patients to physicians or podiatrists when more advanced care is needed.

Training and regulation vary by country. In some regions the title corresponds to a regulated profession with formal education and licensure; in others it denotes a foot-care practitioner with an expanded scope of practice under supervision. Professional standards are overseen by national or regional bodies, and continuing education is often required.

Fotterapeuts work in private clinics, hospitals, care homes, or in patients’ homes. The role is particularly important for at‑risk groups, such as people with diabetes, older adults, and individuals with circulatory or neurological problems, where proper foot care helps prevent infections and serious complications.

Relation to other professions: The fotterapeut role overlaps in some jurisdictions with podiatrists (or chiropodists), though the exact responsibilities and permitted practices differ by country. Collaboration with dermatologists, nurses, and physiotherapists can also occur, depending on local regulatory frameworks.
