Foszforeltávolítás, also known as phosphorus removal, is a crucial process in wastewater treatment designed to reduce the amount of phosphorus discharged into the environment. Phosphorus is a nutrient that, in excess, can lead to eutrophication of water bodies. This process occurs when excessive nutrients stimulate the growth of algae and aquatic plants, depleting oxygen levels when they decompose and harming aquatic ecosystems.

There are several methods for phosphorus removal. Chemical precipitation is a common technique where chemicals like aluminum sulfate (alum), ferric chloride, or lime are added to the wastewater. These chemicals react with dissolved phosphorus to form insoluble compounds that can then be settled out as sludge. Biological phosphorus removal utilizes microorganisms that are specifically encouraged to accumulate phosphorus within their cells. These microorganisms, often referred to as enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) bacteria, are subjected to alternating anaerobic and aerobic conditions. Under anaerobic conditions, they release stored phosphorus, and under aerobic conditions, they take up significantly more phosphorus than they release, effectively removing it from the water.

The choice of phosphorus removal method depends on factors such as the initial phosphorus concentration in the wastewater, the desired level of removal, cost considerations, and the specific characteristics of the wastewater treatment plant. Effective phosphorus removal is vital for protecting water quality and maintaining healthy aquatic environments.
