A fosfatiryhmä, often translated as phosphate group, is a functional group in organic chemistry and biochemistry with the chemical formula PO4^3-. It consists of a central phosphorus atom bonded to four oxygen atoms. In biological systems, the phosphate group is a crucial component of many essential molecules, most notably nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

In DNA and RNA, phosphate groups form the backbone of the molecule, linking the sugar units together. This phosphodiester bond is vital for the structural integrity of genetic material. ATP, the primary energy currency of cells, contains a chain of three phosphate groups. The energy released when the bonds between these phosphate groups are broken and reformed is used to power various cellular processes.

Phosphate groups can also be found in phospholipids, which are major components of cell membranes. They are esterified to glycerol, with fatty acid chains attached to the other positions of the glycerol molecule, forming a hydrophilic head (the phosphate group) and a hydrophobic tail. Furthermore, phosphate groups are involved in protein phosphorylation, a key regulatory mechanism in cellular signaling pathways. Phosphorylation, the addition of a phosphate group to a protein, can alter the protein's activity, localization, or interaction with other molecules.
