The process involves immersing the metal part in a phosphating solution, typically containing phosphoric acid and metal phosphates. A chemical reaction occurs, forming a thin layer of insoluble metal phosphate crystals on the metal surface. The specific type of phosphate coating depends on the metal being treated and the chemicals used; common types include zinc phosphate, iron phosphate, and manganese phosphate. Zinc phosphate coatings are widely used for their excellent corrosion resistance and paint adhesion properties, particularly on steel and aluminum. Iron phosphate is a simpler and more economical treatment, often used when less demanding corrosion protection is required. Before phosphating, the metal surface must be thoroughly cleaned and degreased to ensure proper coating formation. After phosphating, the part is typically rinsed and often treated with a post-treatment, such as a passivating rinse or a sealant, to further enhance its protective properties.
