In practice, forstadier describe signs, lesions, or changes that may indicate an increased risk of progression to a more advanced state.

In medicine, forstadier commonly refer to lesions or cellular changes that can precede cancer or other serious diseases. Examples include precancerous lesions or dysplastic changes in tissues that, if untreated or unmonitored, may progress toward malignancy. Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and colorectal adenomas are frequently discussed as forstadier to cervical cancer and colorectal cancer, respectively. The term is also used for other preclinical or preclinical-like alterations in various organs.
