In scholarly writing, citation and reference layouts follow specific formats, while in programming, conventions cover comments, bracket placement, and naming schemes. The choice of conventions is influenced by audience, platform, and authority, and may be mandatory in publishers or software projects, or voluntary within communities.

Format conventions are not static; they evolve with technology and practice, and conflicts between conventions can arise when multiple standards intersect. Effective management of format conventions involves documenting guidelines, achieving consensus, and providing clear guidance for users and contributors.
