They also oversee reforestation and habitat restoration, as well as the development of recreational and tourism activities in forested areas. Fire prevention, wildfire risk assessment, and emergency response are common duties in many regions.

Education and professional pathways usually involve a degree in forestry, natural resources, or forest engineering. Training covers ecology, silviculture, economics, and field and laboratory work. Many countries require licensure or accreditation to perform certain tasks, such as harvesting planning or timber cruising. Historically, forestry emerged in Europe in the early modern period as governments and landowners sought to manage timber resources more systematically. The term forestier appears in French and other languages to denote practitioners responsible for forest management.
