Fordonsbränsleinjektion, often referred to simply as fuel injection, is a system used in internal combustion engines to deliver fuel into the engine cylinders. This system replaced older carburetor technology by injecting fuel directly into the intake manifold or the combustion chamber itself.

The primary advantage of fuel injection is its ability to precisely control the amount of fuel delivered to the engine. This precise control allows for more efficient combustion, leading to improved fuel economy and reduced emissions. It also results in better engine performance, providing more consistent power delivery across a wider range of engine speeds and loads.

There are several types of fuel injection systems. Throttle Body Injection (TBI) is an older, simpler form where fuel is injected into the throttle body. Multi-port Fuel Injection (MFI) injects fuel into each cylinder's intake port. Direct Injection (DI) injects fuel directly into the combustion chamber, offering the highest levels of efficiency and performance.

Modern fuel injection systems are electronically controlled. Sensors monitor various engine conditions, such as air temperature, engine speed, throttle position, and oxygen levels in the exhaust. An engine control unit (ECU) processes this data and calculates the optimal amount of fuel to inject at the precise moment required for efficient combustion. This sophisticated control ensures the engine operates at its peak efficiency under all driving conditions.
