Fonoloogias, or phonology in many languages, is the branch of linguistics that studies the systematic organization of sounds in languages. It investigates how sounds function to encode meaning and how sound systems are structured and vary across languages and dialects.

Core concepts include phonemes, the abstract units that distinguish meaning, and allophones, contextual realizations of a phoneme that do not change meaning. Phonotactics describes the permissible sequences and structures of sounds within a language, including syllable structure and prosodic patterns such as stress, rhythm, and intonation. In tonal languages, tone is part of the phonological system and can change the meaning of words. The relationship between phonology and phonetics is central: phonology abstracts away from physical realization to focus on abstract units and their systematic organization.

Phonological analysis often uses data from minimal pairs, distribution of sounds, and phonotactic constraints to describe a language’s sound system. Theoretical approaches have evolved from rule-based descriptions to constraint-based and typological models. Classic generative phonology introduced rules to derive surface forms from underlying representations, while later frameworks such as autosegmental and metrical phonology, feature geometry, and Optimality Theory (OT) offer alternative ways to account for observed patterns.

Applications of fonoloogias include language documentation and description, literacy and pedagogy, speech-language pathology, and speech technology, including speech synthesis and recognition. Phonology also interfaces with morphology and syntax in morphophonology and the study of tone and stress systems across languages.
