A fonatsioonisüsteem, often translated as a sound system or phonation system, refers to the physiological mechanisms in the human body responsible for producing voice. This complex system involves the interplay of the respiratory system, the larynx (voice box), and the vocal tract. The process begins with the lungs, which provide the airflow necessary for phonation. This air is then expelled upwards through the trachea and into the larynx.

Within the larynx are the vocal folds, two muscular bands that can be brought together or separated. When the vocal folds are brought together and air passes through them, they vibrate. This vibration creates the fundamental frequency of the sound produced. The tension and length of the vocal folds can be adjusted, allowing for changes in pitch. Higher tension and shorter folds produce higher pitches, while lower tension and longer folds produce lower pitches.

Following phonation in the larynx, the sound waves travel through the vocal tract, which includes the pharynx, oral cavity (mouth), and nasal cavity. The shape and size of the vocal tract are modified by the tongue, lips, jaw, and soft palate. These articulations act as resonators and filters, shaping the raw laryngeal sound into distinct speech sounds, including vowels and consonants.
