Follikulogenesis is the biological process of ovarian follicle development. It begins with primordial follicles, which are present in the ovaries of females at birth. These follicles contain an oocyte arrested in prophase I of meiosis, surrounded by a single layer of flattened granulosa cells. The process is a continuous series of developmental stages, initiated by the recruitment of primordial follicles into a growing pool.

Once recruited, the primordial follicle transitions into a primary follicle, where the granulosa cells proliferate and become cuboidal. The oocyte also grows significantly. Following this, the primary follicle develops into a secondary follicle, characterized by multiple layers of granulosa cells and the formation of the zona pellucida, a glycoprotein coat surrounding the oocyte.

The next stage is the tertiary or antral follicle, distinguished by the development of an antrum, a fluid-filled cavity within the granulosa cell layers. The oocyte is now surrounded by granulosa cells forming the cumulus oophorus. Hormonal signals, particularly follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), play a crucial role in driving the growth and maturation of these follicles.

The mature follicle, known as the Graafian follicle, is the largest and most developed stage. It is prepared for ovulation, where the oocyte will be released from the ovary. Follikulogenesis is a complex, tightly regulated process essential for female fertility, involving intricate cellular interactions and hormonal signaling pathways. Disturbances in follikulogenesis can lead to infertility or other reproductive disorders.
