Flygfuel is a term that has emerged in discussions surrounding sustainable aviation. It refers to a category of fuels designed to power aircraft that are intended to have a lower carbon footprint compared to conventional kerosene-based jet fuels. The primary goal of flygfuel is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from air travel, a sector that is a significant contributor to global emissions.

There are several types of fuels that fall under the umbrella of flygfuel, most notably sustainable aviation fuels, or SAFs. SAFs can be produced from a variety of feedstocks, including used cooking oil, agricultural waste, forestry residues, and even certain types of algae. Advanced SAFs are also being developed using Power-to-Liquid (PtL) or electrofuel processes, which combine renewable electricity with captured carbon dioxide and hydrogen.

The aviation industry is increasingly looking towards flygfuel as a key pathway to decarbonization, especially in the short to medium term, as electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft face significant technological hurdles for widespread commercial adoption on long-haul routes. While flygfuel offers a promising solution, challenges remain, including scalability of production, cost competitiveness with traditional jet fuel, and ensuring sustainable sourcing of feedstocks to avoid unintended environmental consequences. Nevertheless, flygfuel represents a critical area of research and development aimed at making air travel more environmentally sustainable.
