A well-known class of fluorühendites are fluorocarbons, where all hydrogen atoms in a hydrocarbon are replaced by fluorine. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), commonly known by the brand name Teflon, is a prominent example. Its non-stick properties make it invaluable for cookware, and its low friction coefficient is utilized in various industrial applications.

Other fluorühendites have significant uses in medicine, such as certain anesthetics and antidepressants. Fluoride, a simple ion of fluorine, is added to toothpaste and water supplies to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent cavities. However, excessive intake of fluoride can be detrimental.

The production and disposal of some fluorühendites, particularly per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), have raised environmental concerns due to their persistence in the environment and potential health effects. Research continues to understand and mitigate the impacts of these compounds.
