Fluidization is a process in which a bed of solid particles is brought into a state resembling a fluid. This occurs when a liquid or gas is passed upward through a bed of finely divided solid particles. If the velocity of the fluid is low, the fluid will simply percolate through the voids between the particles. However, as the velocity increases, a point is reached where the drag force exerted by the fluid on the particles becomes equal to the effective weight of the particles. At this point, the bed expands, and the particles begin to move and mix with the fluid, behaving as if they were a liquid. This state is known as fluidization.

There are several types of fluidization, including bubbling fluidization, turbulent fluidization, and fast fluidization, depending on the fluid velocity and particle properties. In bubbling fluidization, large bubbles of the fluid rise through the bed, causing significant mixing. Turbulent fluidization occurs at higher velocities, leading to more intense mixing and particle attrition. Fast fluidization is characterized by a high velocity where solids are entrained and carried out of the reactor, requiring a system to separate and recirculate them.

Fluidization technology has numerous industrial applications. It is widely used in chemical engineering processes such as catalytic cracking in petroleum refining, combustion of solid fuels, drying of solids, and manufacturing of pharmaceuticals and catalysts. The advantages of fluidization include excellent heat and mass transfer rates, uniform temperature distribution throughout the bed, and ease of continuous operation. However, challenges such as particle attrition, elutriation (fine particle loss), and potential for slugging (formation of large gas pockets) need to be managed.
