Fluidization is a process in which a bed of solid particles is brought into a state resembling a fluid. This occurs when a liquid or gas is passed upward through a bed of finely divided solid particles. If the velocity of the fluid is low, the fluid will simply percolate through the voids between the particles. However, as the velocity increases, a point is reached where the drag force exerted by the fluid on the particles becomes equal to the effective weight of the particles. At this point, the bed expands, and the particles begin to move and mix with the fluid, behaving as if they were a liquid. This state is known as fluidization.
