Floodattacker is a term used to describe an individual or entity that engages in denial-of-service (DoS) or distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. These attacks aim to overwhelm a target system, such as a website or server, with a flood of traffic, making it unavailable to legitimate users. The attacker's goal is typically to disrupt the target's operations, extort money, or create a distraction for other malicious activities.

DoS and DDoS attacks are carried out by sending a large volume of requests from a single source (DoS) or multiple compromised sources, known as a botnet (DDoS), to the target. The sheer volume of traffic consumes the target's resources, such as bandwidth, processing power, or memory, leading to its degradation or complete shutdown. Common attack vectors include SYN floods, UDP floods, and HTTP floods, each exploiting different network or application layer vulnerabilities.

The motivations behind flood attacks can vary. They might be financially driven, with attackers demanding ransom to stop the assault or to prevent future attacks. In some cases, attacks are launched out of revenge, to cause reputational damage, or as a form of cyber-terrorism.

Mitigating flood attacks involves a combination of proactive and reactive measures. Network infrastructure can be hardened with firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, and traffic filtering. Content delivery networks (CDNs) and specialized DDoS mitigation services can help absorb and filter malicious traffic before it reaches the target server. Monitoring network traffic for unusual patterns and having an incident response plan in place are crucial for effective defense.
