Its minimalist design, high difficulty, and widespread accessibility contributed to rapid virality and extensive media coverage. In 2014, Nguyen removed the game from app stores, citing concerns over its addictive nature. The release sparked a large number of clones and inspired ongoing discussions about monetization, ethics, and app-store dynamics. The term “flappy” therefore became associated with simple, highly challenging mobile games as well as the broader meme culture that followed.
