Fixants, or fixatives, are chemical agents that stabilize or immobilize substances on a surface by forming bonds or creating a physical barrier. They are used in art, textile dyeing, photography, and biology to preserve appearance, color, or structure.

In art and drawing, fixants are sprayed or brushed onto powders such as charcoal, graphite, or pastel to prevent smudging and to fix marks. They can be resin-based, shellac-based, or water-based, and may alter surface sheen and tone slightly. Proper ventilation is often recommended due to fumes.

In textiles and dyeing, fixants improve color fastness by promoting adhesion of dyes to fibers. They vary with fiber type and dye class and often require heat-setting or post-treatment to maximize durability of the color.

In photography, a fixer dissolves unexposed light-sensitive compounds, stabilizing the image after development. Traditional fixers use thiosulfate compounds; adequate washing and proper disposal are important to remove residual chemicals and protect the environment.

In biology and histology, fixatives preserve tissue structure by cross-linking proteins and other biomolecules. Common fixatives include formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, and alcohols. Fixation preserves morphology but can affect antigen availability for subsequent staining or analysis.
