Filtreringsbarrierer, often referred to as filtration barriers, are essential components in a variety of scientific and industrial processes. They function by selectively allowing certain substances to pass through while retaining others, based on physical or chemical properties. The most common type of filtration barrier is a physical membrane with pores of a specific size. These pores are small enough to block particles or molecules larger than the pore diameter, effectively separating them from the fluid that passes through. The effectiveness of a filtration barrier is often described by its pore size, material, and the pressure applied.

Different types of filtration barriers exist, tailored to specific applications. Microfiltration, for instance, uses membranes with pore sizes ranging from 0.1 to 10 micrometers, suitable for removing bacteria and suspended solids. Ultrafiltration membranes have smaller pores (0.01 to 0.1 micrometers) and can separate proteins and viruses. Nanofiltration, with even smaller pores, is used for removing dissolved salts and multivalent ions. Reverse osmosis is the finest form, with pore sizes of around 0.0001 micrometers, capable of removing virtually all dissolved solids, including ions.

Beyond membranes, filtration barriers can also be constructed from granular materials like sand or activated carbon. In these cases, the separation occurs through a combination of mechanical straining and adsorption. The choice of filtration barrier depends on the nature of the contaminants to be removed and the desired purity of the filtrate. They are critical in water purification, food and beverage processing, pharmaceuticals, and chemical manufacturing, ensuring product quality and safety.
