Filterordern is not a widely established term in mainstream signal processing literature. It appears to be a hybrid or misspelling that can refer to the concept of filter order, which in English is the measure of a filter’s complexity and selectivity. In German, the similar concept is often called Filterordnung, though the exact spelling and usage vary by context. When used, filterordern generally aims to denote the same basic idea: the order of a filter.

In signal processing, the filter order is the degree of the filter’s transfer function. For an nth-order filter, the output depends on the input and its past n samples (in discrete-time) or on the output of an nth-degree differential equation (in continuous-time). In digital filters, the order is connected to the number of taps in a finite impulse response (FIR) filter or to the number of poles in an infinite impulse response (IIR) filter. A higher order typically yields a steeper transition between passband and stopband and better attenuation in the stopband, at the cost of greater computational load and potential numerical sensitivity.

Designers choose filter order based on desired frequency response, stability considerations (especially for high-order IIR filters), and resource constraints. Common approaches include FIR design using windowing or frequency-sampling methods, and IIR design using pole-zero placement or transformation methods.
