Philology, in the context of filologija, is the study of language in historical texts and literary contexts. It combines linguistic analysis with the study of literature, culture, and textual transmission to explain how languages develop and how written texts are produced, copied, and interpreted over time. Philology seeks to reconstruct older stages of languages, assess the authenticity and meaning of manuscripts, and produce critical editions of texts.

Subfields include historical or comparative philology, which traces sound and grammatical changes across languages; textual criticism, which evaluates manuscript evidence; paleography, which studies handwriting; etymology, which investigates word origins; and literary philology, which analyzes texts within their historical and cultural contexts. Philology often relies on manuscript studies, codicology, and historically informed linguistic methods, and it intersects with general linguistics and literary studies.

Historically, philology emerged in classical antiquity with Greek and Latin scholars and matured in the 19th century as a central humanities discipline at European universities. Over time, its methods influenced or gradually transformed into modern linguistics, literary theory, and cultural history, while many programs retain philology as an integral approach to language and textual heritage.

In contemporary higher education, philology is taught as part of humanities faculties or as philology or literary studies programs. Practitioners analyze ancient, medieval, and modern texts, decipher manuscripts, and contribute to the critical editing of sources and to the understanding of linguistic change and literary tradition.
