Filmskærmen, often translated as "film screen" or "movie screen," refers to the reflective surface upon which a projected image is displayed in a cinema or home theater. Its primary function is to receive light from a projector and diffuse it evenly to an audience, creating the visual experience of a film. The quality of the filmskærm significantly impacts the perceived brightness, contrast, color accuracy, and viewing angle of the projected image.

There are various types of filmskærme, each with different properties. The most common is a matte white screen, which offers a wide viewing angle and good color neutrality. Other types include gain screens, which reflect more light back towards the audience, resulting in a brighter image but often with a narrower viewing cone, and perforated screens, which have tiny holes to allow sound to pass through from speakers placed behind the screen. The material and coating of the filmskærm are crucial factors in its performance, with some designed to enhance specific aspects like black levels or 3D projection. The size and aspect ratio of the filmskærm are also important considerations, typically matching the aspect ratio of the film being shown to avoid letterboxing or pillarboxing.
