Fil seria, also known as filaria or filariasis, is a parasitic disease caused by thread-like roundworms belonging to the filarial family. These parasites are transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. There are several species of filarial worms that can cause filariasis in humans, each leading to different clinical manifestations.

The most common forms of filariasis include lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis (river blindness), and loiasis. Lymphatic filariasis is characterized by the blockage of the lymphatic system, leading to swelling of the limbs and genitals, a condition known as lymphedema or elephantiasis. Onchocerciasis can cause severe itching, skin lesions, and irreversible blindness. Loiasis, primarily found in West and Central Africa, involves the migration of the worm across the eye, causing discomfort and visual disturbances.

Diagnosis typically involves microscopic examination of blood or skin samples to detect the presence of microfilariae, the larval stage of the worm. Treatment usually involves antiparasitic drugs, such as diethylcarbamazine (DEC) or ivermectin, often in combination with antibiotics. Prevention strategies focus on mosquito control measures, including insecticide-treated bed nets and personal repellents, as well as mass drug administration campaigns in endemic areas to reduce the parasite reservoir. Filariasis is considered a neglected tropical disease, affecting millions of people worldwide, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions.
