Filatélia is the study, collection, and trading of postage stamps. The term is derived from the Greek words "philein," meaning "to love," and "télos," meaning "end," referring to the end product of the postal service. The practice began in the 19th century with the advent of adhesive postage stamps, which replaced the previous practice of affixing postage due on envelopes.

Collectors, known as philatelists, often categorize stamps based on various criteria such as country of issue, denomination, design, and rarity. Some stamps are highly sought after due to their historical significance, artistic value, or scarcity. The most valuable stamp in the world is the 1856 "Penny Black," which sold for $1.6 million in 2012.

Filatélia can be a hobby or a profession, with some collectors specializing in certain types of stamps or regions. There are numerous clubs and organizations worldwide dedicated to the exchange and preservation of stamps. The most prestigious event in the philatelic world is the Stanley Gibbons Stamp Auction, held annually in London.

In addition to collecting stamps, filatélia also encompasses the study of postal history, the design and production of stamps, and the impact of stamps on society. The International Philatelic Bureau (FIP) is the governing body for the sport, overseeing competitions and promoting the hobby.
