Felületez is a term used primarily in horticulture and green roof construction to describe the process of covering an existing surface with a layer of soil, growing medium or protective substratum. The concept emerged in the late twentieth century as urban planning and environmental design increased interest in sustainable vegetation systems for rooftops, walls and low‑slope terraces. The method integrates a lightweight layer, often ranging from 10 to 30 centimetres in depth, that can support grazing, flowering or even small shrubs without imposing excessive weight on the underlying structure.

The initial design stage involves evaluating the load-bearing capacity of the existing surface. Materials are then selected to meet specific ecological or aesthetic goals. Common substrates include a combination of topsoil, compost, fine gravel and polymer additives that improve aeration and water retention. When adapted to green roof applications, felületez layers are typically constructed with drainage layers to prevent hydrostatic pressure and root rot.

Implementation techniques vary from simple layer-by-layer stacking to more complex geocomposite systems that incorporate vertical drainage and erosion control. In all cases, proper curing, irrigation design, and weed suppression are critical to the long-term survival of the vegetation. Because the process allows for low-maintenance and carbon sequestration benefits, felületez is increasingly promoted in European climate‑action policies and NGO projects focused on urban greening.
