Felhőszakadás is a Hungarian term referring to a very intense and localized rainfall, often accompanied by strong winds and sometimes hail. It is a type of severe weather event that can cause significant flash flooding and damage in a short period. The term literally translates to "cloud burst" or "cloud tearing," emphasizing the sudden and overwhelming nature of the precipitation.

These events are typically caused by the rapid development of cumulonimbus clouds, which are tall, dense clouds capable of producing thunderstorms. When atmospheric conditions are unstable, with warm, moist air rising rapidly and encountering cooler air at higher altitudes, these clouds can form quickly. The moisture within these clouds condenses and grows into large raindrops, which then fall to the ground at a very high rate.

Felhőszakadás can occur during any season but is more common during the warmer months when atmospheric instability is more prevalent. The localized nature means that while one area might experience a deluge, a nearby location could remain relatively dry. The intensity of the rainfall can exceed the capacity of natural drainage systems and urban infrastructure, leading to flash floods, landslides, and property damage. Emergency services are often mobilized to deal with the aftermath of such events.
