Felhajlás is a Hungarian term that translates to "erection" in English. It refers to the physiological process where the penis becomes engorged with blood, causing it to swell and become rigid. This phenomenon is most commonly associated with sexual arousal but can also occur spontaneously or due to non-sexual stimuli.

The process of erection involves a complex interplay of neurological, vascular, and hormonal factors. When a person is sexually stimulated, the brain sends signals through the spinal cord to the nerves that control blood flow to the penis. These nerves release chemicals that cause the smooth muscles in the penile arteries to relax, allowing more blood to flow into the erectile tissues, known as the corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum. As these tissues fill with blood, they expand, compressing the veins that normally drain blood away from the penis. This increased blood inflow and decreased outflow result in the penis becoming firm and erect.

Erections can vary in their duration and firmness. They can occur during sleep, a phenomenon known as nocturnal penile tumescence, which is a normal physiological process. Issues with achieving or maintaining an erection are generally referred to as erectile dysfunction. Various factors can contribute to erectile dysfunction, including psychological issues, certain medical conditions, and lifestyle choices.
