Field detectors, sometimes rendered as feildetekteres in Norwegian-language contexts, are instruments designed to detect and measure physical fields such as magnetic, electric, gravitational, or electromagnetic radiation fields. They translate variations in a field into a measurable signal, typically an electrical voltage or current or an optical readout, which can be analyzed to determine field strength, direction, and temporal changes.

Common types include magnetic field detectors (magnetometers) such as Hall effect sensors, fluxgate magnetometers, and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometers; electric field detectors like field mills and capacitive sensors; gravitational field detectors including gravimeters and atom interferometers; and detectors for electromagnetic radiation fields such as photodiodes, bolometers, and radiometers that respond to light, infrared, or radio waves. Some devices combine sensing of multiple fields in a single instrument.

Operation principles involve transducers that convert field-induced forces, flux changes, or energy deposition into electrical, optical, or acoustic signals. The resulting data are processed, calibrated, and sometimes integrated with geophysical or space mission data to map field distributions and dynamics.

Applications span geophysics, space exploration, and fundamental physics experiments, as well as industrial monitoring, safety systems, and environmental sensing. Historically, field detectors evolved from simple galvanometers to sophisticated magnetometers and gravimeters, including SQUID devices and atom-interferometer sensors, which push sensitivity and precision. Limitations include noise, temperature sensitivity, calibration requirements, and limited dynamic range, driving ongoing research into improved sensitivity, bandwidth, and miniaturization.
