Farveblinde, also known as color blindness, is a condition that affects a person's ability to distinguish certain colors. It is not a blindness in the traditional sense, but rather a reduced ability to see colors or to perceive them differently from most people. The most common form is red-green color blindness, where individuals have difficulty distinguishing between reds and greens. Other types include blue-yellow color blindness and total color blindness (achromatopsia), which is very rare.

This condition is usually inherited, meaning it is passed down through genes from parents to children. It is much more common in males than in females. In most cases, farveblinde is caused by a problem with the cone cells in the retina of the eye, which are responsible for color vision. There are three types of cone cells, each sensitive to different wavelengths of light (red, green, and blue). If one or more of these cone types are missing, not working correctly, or detect a different color than normal, it can lead to color vision deficiency.

Farveblinde can also be acquired due to certain medical conditions, such as glaucoma, diabetes, or age-related macular degeneration, or as a side effect of some medications. In most cases, farveblinde does not significantly impair daily life, although some occupations or activities may be challenging. Diagnosis is typically made through simple eye tests, such as the Ishihara color vision test. While there is no cure for inherited farveblinde, specialized lenses and digital tools can help some individuals manage the condition.
