Familiaritet is a Danish concept describing the state or degree of being familiar with something—whether a person, place, object, idea, or situation. It includes recognition, understanding, and the sense of personal acquaintance that comes from experience. In cognitive psychology, familiarity is a non-recollective sense of knowing something, distinct from detailed memory. This subjective state can influence judgments, preferences, and behavior even when memories are weak.

The term derives from Latin familiaris and has cognates in many languages, such as English familiarity. In Danish, familiaritet covers both interpersonal familiarity (how well one knows another) and general familiarity with domains or stimuli. In research and practice, the concept describes how well someone recognizes or feels at ease with a given thing or situation.

In psychology, the mere exposure effect shows that repeated exposure to a stimulus increases familiarity and can raise liking, even without conscious recall. In design and communication, familiarity with an interface, brand, or layout reduces cognitive load and improves usability and trust. Socially, familiarity can aid cooperation and rapport, but excessive familiarity may lead to bias or stereotyping.

Measurement of familiaritet typically uses self-report scales, reaction time tasks, or recognition tests that separate familiarity from recall. Cultural background and context shape how familiarity forms and is interpreted. As with related concepts, familiarity has benefits and potential drawbacks in perception and decision making.
