Fall restraint systems prevent a fall by limiting movement, often using a harness and lanyard attached to a secure anchor so the worker cannot reach the edge of a hazard.

Common components include harnesses (such as EN 361), lanyards (EN 354), energy absorbers (EN 355), connectors (EN 362), and anchor devices (EN 795). Lifelines and rope systems may also be used in more complex work at height. In many workplaces, fall protection also encompasses collective measures like guardrails and safety nets, which can reduce the need for individual equipment.

Standards and training are central to safe use. Regulations typically require a risk assessment, certified equipment, and training on proper fitting, use, inspection, and rescue procedures. Equipment should be inspected before each use, with periodic checks by a competent person. Components showing wear or damage must be retired from service. Proper storage and maintenance help ensure reliability and prolong equipment life.
